Turkish Arts Vocabulary — Words for Art, Music & Culture

Art and music carry some of a language's most expressive words, and Turkish is a rewarding place to learn them — it's spelled exactly as it sounds, so once you know the alphabet you can read anything. This page collects essential Turkish vocabulary for art, music and culture, from çizim (drawing) and renk (colour) to şarkı (song) and melodi (melody), each with its English meaning, its pronunciation and a button to hear it spoken in a native voice. A note for English speakers: Turkish uses a familiar Latin alphabet with a few extra letters — the ç is 'ch', the ş is 'sh', the dotless ı is a sound English doesn't quite have — and best of all, spelling is perfectly regular. Turkish is also agglutinative, building long words by stacking endings onto a root, and it follows vowel harmony, so those endings shift to match the vowels already in the word. None of that matters for your first words, though: learn the base, hear it, and the grammar comes later. There's no gender to memorise, either. Tap any 🔊 to listen, skim the table, then take these into Linguver, where the English word drops and you shoot its Turkish translation from the drum.

Reading a list won't make these stick. Linguver turns vocabulary into a shooting game — the English word falls, you spin the drum and fire its Turkish translation. You recall the word under a little pressure, so it stays. A way to learn that doesn't feel like studying.
